Embed a YouTube Video in PowerPoint

When creating a presentation – you must always keep your audience in mind. What can you as the presenter do to keep them engaged and actively learning? When using PowerPoint you have many options to include. Let’s start with video.
Video is a simple way to give your audience a break and to present information in a different way. YouTube is an excellent resource for useful free videos.
A simple way to include a YouTube video in your presentation is to create a link to that video. You can create a hyperlink in PowerPoint by doing the following:
1)      Go to YouTube and search for a video you would like to use.
2)   Once you have found the video, go to the address bar, right click, and the click copy.

3)      Go to your PowerPoint presentation.
4)      Type in the text you would like your audience to see.  For example, I have found a humorous video about realtor negotiations, so I type in the following text “The Negotiation Process”.
5)    Highlight the text, right click, and then click hyperlink.
7)      If you would like to check to see if your hyperlink is working, go to Slide Show View and click on the link. When you do, it will open the Internet, go to YouTube, and play your video.
The positive of doing it this way is it is simple and requires little knowledge of PowerPoint.
The negative of doing it this way is when you open YouTube you also get previews of other videos to the right of the screen. These sometimes can be inappropriate for your audience. ____________________________________________________________________
Another way to include a YouTube video in your PowerPoint is embedding. By embedding the video into PowerPoint, the video plays directly in the presentation, it does not open the internet, and you do not go to the YouTube website. This way requires a little more attention to detail but it also gives you more control of your presentation.
1) In PowerPoint you will need to add the Developer Ribbon.
     a) Click on the drop down arrow of the Quick Access Toolbar and then click on More Commands.

    b) Click on Popular and then place a checkmark in the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon.
    c)  Click OK.

2)  Insert a blank slide to embed your video on.
3)  Click on the Developer Ribbon and then click on More Controls (it looks like a hammer and a wrench).

4)  Scroll through the list provided and choose Shockwave Flash Object.
5)  Using your mouse, draw a square across the page – it should be as large as you want your video player to be. Point to the place you would like to start, hold down your left mouse button and drag to the place you would like to stop and let go of the left mouse button.

6)  Go to YouTube and find the video you would like to use.
7)  Once you have found the video you would like to use, go to the address bar, right click, and copy.
8)  Go back to your PowerPoint presentation and the slide you have created for your video. Click on Properties on the Developer ribbon.

9)  After you have clicked on Properties you will get a dialogue box. Look for the text Movie. Select the box next to Movie. Right click on the box and paste the URL from YouTube.

10)   After pasting the link, you will need to make a few changes to the address. Find the word watch? in the address and delete the word. Then change the =’s to  /’s.

When you are done the address should look like the following:

http://www.youtube.com/v/ri5K2Jii8xk&feature/g-all-u&context/G28d5736FAAAAAAAADAA

11)  After you have finished the changes you can close the property box.
12)   To see the video, click PowerPoint Show. The video should show inside the PowerPoint window.

You have now embedded a video into your PowerPoint presentation. You will still need Internet access while viewing your presentation but embedding gives you a cleaner look to your presentation.
There are many other options for including video in your PowerPoint but this is an excellent way to begin trying something new. I have also included an instructional video for embeding the video in PowerPoint.

In the next blog I will discuss how to create more audience interaction.

PowerPoint & Storyboards

As stated in the previous blog it is important to know why you are creating a PowerPoint presentation. Once you have decided the point of the presentation, who your audience will be, and if it is a live presentation or not, you are ready to begin creating the storyboard. Storyboards are graphic organizers that allow you the opportunity to layout your presentation visually. For example, for each slide you would decide what information you need and ideas for chunking the material. The planning stage allows you an opportunity to think through the process. There are many different ways to create a storyboard. You could hand draw and write a storyboard, you could use Word and create an outline, or you could use a template (there are many online). I have created my storyboard using PowerPoint which works well for my creative process. In PowerPoint you have the option of using the Notes Pane at the bottom of the screen. This pane is useful for storing ideas and information you would like to s...

InsertLearning.com

I am so excited. So excited, that I am carving out time to write a blog post; something I haven’t done in quite a while. I was texted a blog post: Cult of Pedagogy - 6 Ed Tech Tools to try in 2018 by the middle school principal. Let me just say, I haven’t been this excited about a new tech tool since I was introduced to Flipgrid. Are you curious yet about the tool? How about now? InsertLearning.com I am just going to call it a game changer for literacy! At least in my humble view. “How does it work”, I can hear you thinking. You can take any article from the internet, add questions (multiple choice and discussion), highlight important text, leave notes, and add YouTube videos and images. You can also record yourself reading. Then, you can assign the article through your Google Classroom. Not only is this an excellent resource for teachers to create documents for their students, this is an excellent way for students to read and process text. Students can re...

LiveBinders - Pretty Cool

I have been utilizing my new favorite resource in class - http://www.livebinders.com/. This is an excellent free resource for teachers and trainers. LiveBinders is a website where users gather information into a virtual notebook. The notebook has tabs where internet resources (websites, videos, and blogs) can be added by the user. There is a plethora of notebooks already created that can be used in the classroom. Users can also create their own notebook pages with information they would like to share. Students have been using my LiveBinder to learn how to create Claymation projects.  My favorite aspect of LiveBinders is that I can add all the websites and YouTube videos for my students to my pages. Students have everything they need access to without going to the internet and searching, typing URL’s incorrectly, or getting sidetracked by other things on the internet. LiveBinders also plays the YouTube videos inside the LiveBinder window. By playing the video inside LiveBinders, s...
