Embed a YouTube Video in PowerPoint

When creating a presentation – you must always keep your audience in mind. What can you as the presenter do to keep them engaged and actively learning? When using PowerPoint you have many options to include. Let’s start with video.
Video is a simple way to give your audience a break and to present information in a different way. YouTube is an excellent resource for useful free videos.
A simple way to include a YouTube video in your presentation is to create a link to that video. You can create a hyperlink in PowerPoint by doing the following:
1)      Go to YouTube and search for a video you would like to use.
2)   Once you have found the video, go to the address bar, right click, and the click copy.

3)      Go to your PowerPoint presentation.
4)      Type in the text you would like your audience to see.  For example, I have found a humorous video about realtor negotiations, so I type in the following text “The Negotiation Process”.
5)    Highlight the text, right click, and then click hyperlink.
7)      If you would like to check to see if your hyperlink is working, go to Slide Show View and click on the link. When you do, it will open the Internet, go to YouTube, and play your video.
The positive of doing it this way is it is simple and requires little knowledge of PowerPoint.
The negative of doing it this way is when you open YouTube you also get previews of other videos to the right of the screen. These sometimes can be inappropriate for your audience. ____________________________________________________________________
Another way to include a YouTube video in your PowerPoint is embedding. By embedding the video into PowerPoint, the video plays directly in the presentation, it does not open the internet, and you do not go to the YouTube website. This way requires a little more attention to detail but it also gives you more control of your presentation.
1) In PowerPoint you will need to add the Developer Ribbon.
     a) Click on the drop down arrow of the Quick Access Toolbar and then click on More Commands.

    b) Click on Popular and then place a checkmark in the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon.
    c)  Click OK.

2)  Insert a blank slide to embed your video on.
3)  Click on the Developer Ribbon and then click on More Controls (it looks like a hammer and a wrench).

4)  Scroll through the list provided and choose Shockwave Flash Object.
5)  Using your mouse, draw a square across the page – it should be as large as you want your video player to be. Point to the place you would like to start, hold down your left mouse button and drag to the place you would like to stop and let go of the left mouse button.

6)  Go to YouTube and find the video you would like to use.
7)  Once you have found the video you would like to use, go to the address bar, right click, and copy.
8)  Go back to your PowerPoint presentation and the slide you have created for your video. Click on Properties on the Developer ribbon.

9)  After you have clicked on Properties you will get a dialogue box. Look for the text Movie. Select the box next to Movie. Right click on the box and paste the URL from YouTube.

10)   After pasting the link, you will need to make a few changes to the address. Find the word watch? in the address and delete the word. Then change the =’s to  /’s.

When you are done the address should look like the following:

http://www.youtube.com/v/ri5K2Jii8xk&feature/g-all-u&context/G28d5736FAAAAAAAADAA

11)  After you have finished the changes you can close the property box.
12)   To see the video, click PowerPoint Show. The video should show inside the PowerPoint window.

You have now embedded a video into your PowerPoint presentation. You will still need Internet access while viewing your presentation but embedding gives you a cleaner look to your presentation.
There are many other options for including video in your PowerPoint but this is an excellent way to begin trying something new. I have also included an instructional video for embeding the video in PowerPoint.

In the next blog I will discuss how to create more audience interaction.

Talking About Content: Flipgrid

Getting our students to use content vocabulary and talk about what they have been learning not only improves their verbal skills but it also creates engagement and increases retention of knowledge. It is difficult in 45 minutes for all of our students to have the opportunity to express themselves. Once again, technology is coming to the rescue. One of the resources I have been introduced to is Flipgrid. https://info.flipgrid.com/ This is an easy to use tool, so easy to use, you could launch it tomorrow in your classroom. A few suggestions for how to use follow: English Students complete the required reading for their chapter and then answer questions. What do you think will happen next? What would happen if...? Why is ________ important to the story? How would the story change if the character was removed? What do you think a good solution to the problem in the story would be? Math How did you solve problem #...? What would happen if you changed ____ to ____? Tell

Life in Music - Lesson Plan/Idea

One of my high school English teachers needed an idea for a unit. I worked up A Life in Music . It allows students to focus on their life events that have shaped them to this point and then select a song that represents that moment. When they are finished, they write a poem/story using the titles of the songs. If you are looking for a song that is a perfect example of this form of writing, check out Kyle Parks’ Fit for the King . Background for those of you who are not from Texas, Mr. Park used the titles or lyrics of all of his favorite George Strait (The King of Country) songs to write his song. The lesson outline: Brainstorm up to 10 major events in your life: Can be done as whole class or small group For each event write a short description or related keywords. Narrow the list to 5 events (optional) Pick 5 songs that are related in some way to your event. The songs must be appropriate: No inappropriate language or derogatory remarks about any group

InsertLearning.com

I am so excited. So excited, that I am carving out time to write a blog post; something I haven’t done in quite a while. I was texted a blog post: Cult of Pedagogy - 6 Ed Tech Tools to try in 2018 by the middle school principal. Let me just say, I haven’t been this excited about a new tech tool since I was introduced to Flipgrid. Are you curious yet about the tool? How about now? InsertLearning.com I am just going to call it a game changer for literacy! At least in my humble view. “How does it work”, I can hear you thinking. You can take any article from the internet, add questions (multiple choice and discussion), highlight important text, leave notes, and add YouTube videos and images. You can also record yourself reading. Then, you can assign the article through your Google Classroom. Not only is this an excellent resource for teachers to create documents for their students, this is an excellent way for students to read and process text. Students can re
